Bonded By Battle is the first book to tell the 150-year story of how dogs and soldiers built a relationship on and off the battlefield, teaming up to become our military’s most advanced counter-terrorism weapon.

A celebration of the bonds of hard work and sacrifice shared by all those who serve in uniform, whether on two legs or on four.” — Randy Brown, author, Welcome to FOB Haiku: War Poems from Inside the Wire
Dogs served as mascots in the Civil War and World War I. Spending almost every hour together, soldiers discovered that dogs could be more than great companions.
The dogs learned to make themselves more and more useful to the soldiers, sniffing out mustard gas, booby traps, enemy combatants, and buried roadside bombs.
And yet, for decades dogs were treated like equipment, discarded on orders from the military command when they were no longer of use. This led to a shameful decision at the end of the Vietnam War.
“Outstanding book! Nancy has captured what it's like for both the dog and handler. She gets it, these are dog TEAMS. The dog and soldier read each other and respond to a situation accordingly.” — Darrell Trent, Vietnam sentry dog handler
